TREATMENT for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Treating Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a challenging condition characterized by intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions) that can significantly impact daily life. At our practice, we use a combination of evidence-based therapeutic methods to treat OCD effectively. We tailor our approach to each individual, combining Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Our integrated care model also involves close collaboration with psychiatrists to ensure comprehensive support.
How We Use ERP for OCD Treatment:
- Gradual Exposure: We begin by identifying each individual’s triggers and creating a hierarchy of fears. Starting with less distressing situations, we gradually expose clients to these triggers in a controlled and supportive environment.
- Response Prevention: Alongside exposure, we work on response prevention, which involves resisting the urge to engage in compulsive behaviors. This is done with the support of a therapist, who helps the client tolerate the anxiety without resorting to rituals.
- Building Coping Skills: ERP also focuses on developing healthy coping strategies to manage anxiety and distress. This might include mindfulness techniques and relaxation exercises that help clients stay grounded during exposure exercises.
ERP has proven to be highly effective in reducing OCD symptoms and helping individuals regain control over their lives. Our experienced therapists are trained in delivering ERP in a compassionate and collaborative manner, ensuring each client feels supported throughout the process.
INTEGRATIVE APPROACHES FOR COMPREHENSIVE OCD CARE
Personalized care for OCD at Palo Alto Marriage and Family Therapy Services
While ERP is highly effective, we recognize that some individuals may benefit from a combination of therapeutic approaches to address underlying trauma, emotional regulation, and cognitive distortions that contribute to Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
Treatment Modalities Available for OCD treatment
01
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT is the foundation of ERP and involves challenging and reframing the irrational thoughts that fuel obsessions. It helps clients identify unhelpful thinking patterns and replace them with healthier, more adaptive ways of thinking.
02
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
For clients whose OCD symptoms are linked to trauma or distressing life events, EMDR can be an effective complementary therapy. EMDR helps process and desensitize the traumatic memories that may exacerbate OCD symptoms. By addressing these root causes, EMDR can help reduce the intensity of obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors.
03
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT focuses on accepting difficult thoughts and emotions rather than trying to change them. This can be particularly helpful for clients with OCD who struggle with the discomfort of intrusive thoughts. ACT encourages clients to live in accordance with their values, even when faced with obsessive thoughts, helping them build a more meaningful life.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills

Collaborative Care with Psychiatrists
Treating OCD often requires a multidisciplinary approach. We work closely with psychiatrists to provide comprehensive care. Medication can be a crucial component in managing OCD symptoms for some clients. By collaborating with psychiatrists, we ensure that our clients receive a balanced treatment plan that includes both therapeutic interventions and medical support when needed.
